Enjoying Autumn: Fall Bucket List

Golden October has arrived! This year, it appears that the cool and inviting fall weather is taking a little longer settling in. But as I walk around, I begin to notice peaks of vivid colors, and feel the gentle breeze swirling through the air. As the season settles in, here are some enjoyable ways to fully embrace everything this time of year has to offer all the way into moody ambiance of November:

Host a Hobbit Party:

Celebrate the season like our favorite halflings. In case you are not familiar with what a hobbit is. They are little people from Lord of the Rings who surely know how to throw a party full of food and merrymaking. Hobbit food is simple food. So make cozy potato soup, bake some bread, put together a charcutier board with blackberries, apples, brie cheese served with honey and nuts and more. Below are some links to hobbit recipes you can follow:

Go blackberry and apple picking:

For the season it is traditional to go apple picking or pumpkin picking but this year, I learned that some orchards will have blackberries for picking up until October depending on where you live. So, if you want to step out of the norm I suggest seeing if one of your local orchards still has blackberries for picking.

Make pumpkin pancakes:

There's nothing I crave more for breakfast during autumn than pumpkin pancakes...(with homemade cinnamon butter or bought from Trader Joes). For all my Gilmore Girls fans out there, this is a fall staple. You can make this while jamming to a Gilmore Girls playlist or hosting a Gilmore Girls watch party. Here is a link to the recipe I used. https://pin.it/6EIwpDqIM

Read Gothic Classics:

This year I have really been enjoying reading classic literature and I have made it a goal to read a few Gothic classics this fall. Gothic literature often has dark or supernatural themes, but I have found that most of the gothic classic literature also explore deep themes of philosophy, human nature and psychology making them deep dives for contemplation and introspection. The gothic classics I will be reading are:

  1. The Picture of Dorian Gray: A novel that explores the twistings of the human soul

  2. The Curious Case of Dr. Jackly and Mr. Hyde: Themes of duality in the human psyche

  3. Frankenstein: Exploring the existential themes of life, death and man vs nature.

Watch the Twilight Zone:

This is one of my all time favorite shows. The originals are in black and white and explore themes of society, science, psychology, morality, philosophy and more in such a creative yet ominous way. To make it more fun have a black and white party, by dressing in black and white and eating black and white food, such as a chicken chili with black beans, drinking dark hot chocolate while eating white powdered donuts, etc. Be creative and have fun with it. Everything is better when you turn it into a mini themed party.

Cozy up with a fall playlist:

Look up your favorite autumn playlist on spotify or play and autumn playlist or autumn ambiance video on youtube. Open the window if it's not to hot and you feel safe to do so, cozy up in your couch with your favorite hot beverage while covered with a warm blanket. Dim the lights and turn on your favorite fall scented candles and just immerse yourself in the ambiance. Here are some options for fall ambiance and playlists:

Bake fall treats:

Whether a simple apple crumble, a traditional pumpkin pie, or a your favorite recipe passed down from generations, schedule some time to bake and be in the present with all the fall scents from the baking or reminiscing on nostalgic adored memories.

Have a rainy hobby day:

I long await for chill rainy days on the weekend to stay inside and enjoy all the cozy hobbies. I know it doesn't have to be raining to do this, but something about hearing the clitter clatter of rain while I am inside just enjoying hobbies, makes it more magical for me. Some cozy hobbies to try:

  • coloring

  • building legos

  • a simple embroidery patch

  • reading

  • playing chess

Make a pioneer doll:

I learned how to make these adorable cloth dolls from the time of Little House on the Prairie while visiting a local fall festival. Below is the link for how to make them. They are simple and comforting to make. I quite enjoyed making these while watching Little House on the Prairie.

See fall decor while walking:

On a cool and sunny day or while pitter pattering in the rain, take some time to enjoy walking around your local neighborhood or driving through other neighborhoods to enjoy all the fall decor displayed outside. Get a hot beverage and enjoy the walk.

Host an autumn tea party:

This year I would like to make it a goal to host a small friendsgiving party for friends and loved ones. Because I love tea parties so much, I figure why not host and autumn tea party. You can serve chai tea, tiny finger sandwhiches and bake yummy fall pastries. Here is a link for a fall tea party inspiration: https://pin.it/4zVtsAWNh

Read a book under a fall tree:

This has been one of my favorite things to do this fall. Just take a drive to a park or nature preserve, find a tree and sit under it with a blanket and read until sunset. I don't know why but it has made my reading experience more special and it is something I intend to to keep doing every season.

I hope these ideas get you excited about the fall season. Leave in the comments how you plan to spend this autumn or share pictures of your creations.
